NY FW Fall 2008: Jovovich-Hawk

Jovovich-Hawk's fall 2008 collection resembled an 18-piece thrift store shopping spree. The collection was simple...very simple. In fact it was so stripped down that it literally looked like the girls came back from the thrift store, and on the way back hand-picked girls off the street, brought them to a common place, invited the media and sent them out in their finds. There were the yay finds and the nay finds but somehow it all worked out of a central inspiration. According to Milla Jovovich, who mentioned, "She's the girl rock stars write songs about," it was really a cool and hip rock kind of inspiration.

The Glacial Installation

As reported by style.com, the Y-3 show was held amidst a "glacial installation” - a 230-foot wall of melting ice. Last year it was rain showers, this year the rain has froze and has begun to melt...hmm...is there a underlying message here. The collection was a typical Yohji Yamamoto fare - exaggerated bagginess, draping, shocking plaids (who would really wear his opening show look?) but all the little details, like the functional zippers, Adidas stripes and puff sleeves make Yamamoto, Yamamoto. His shows are always inspiring in the most unconventional way.

Stylish or Not?

Do you think this is too much? Is the whole high-school prom dress look too much for an evening fashion show, even if it is the showing designer's dress? Either you love this look or not. I think that Ms. Zoe is starting the next trend so you may want to take note. Last season she was in long casual dresses and this season it is short prom frocks.

The Dandy Diddy

Sean Combs, aka Diddy, looking sharper than ever in his shiny champagne blazer. Only he could pull of this look at make it work.

Trend: Black Hose

It seems like the biggest trend going on at the shows are the mix of girly dressy dresses with opaque black hose. This trend has been surfacing and re-surfacing for some time now and has been battling the sans hose naked leg look. I personally love the look of opaque hose, especially in the midst of winter. Who wants to feel the cold dry air on their freshly waxed legs, and I do not care that the Vogue editors have made bare legs a mandatory style trait I am on Team Opaque!

NY FW Fall 2008: Costello Tagliapietra

I have always been a fan of this duo's creative collaboration. Their shows are always short, concise and to the point. Editors often line the front rows hoping to discover knock-out stellar looks, but it usually is not the case. Costello Tagliapietra is about simplicity, consistency and subdued class, not about killer trends or sell-out styles. It is a formula that works, I think at least, and I continue my patriotism because of it.

Style Spotlight: Rachel Zoe

She looks ethereal, younger and more youthful. Is she secretly indulging in those oxygen facials Madonna made so famous, or is it the radiance that comes with super success - her new book, her collaboration with the revival of Halston, and who knows what else is about to happen with this style setter....her own clothing line maybe…

The girls are heavily made-up, perfectly coifed and rocking the new Rock & Republic style - sexy Dandyism.

NY FW Fall 2008: Erin Fetherston

I love Erin Fetherston's fall 2008 collection it was girly but not in that in-your-face kind of way. She had her share of floral prints but they were crafted in a grown up way. I am no flower girl, that is a sure thing, but I absolutely loved her long draping black floral splash gown - it is a little sexy girly and well, serious. There is no nonsense for the Erin Fetherston girl. I really liked the bold silhouettes like the red strapless dress, along with all the little details, like puffed sleeves, shimmer fabrics, tiers and the mix of masculine-inspired blazers with dresses and skirts.

Gucci Loves NY

Gucci has launched a new website to promote the opening of their new 5th Avenue mega store. Visit guccilovesny.com to see just how much Gucci loves New York City. Take a look at Creative Director Frida Giannini and CEO Mark Lee's favorite New York spots. Along with the Company's executives they have enlisted some of the industry's most popular bloggers to submit pictures of their favorite NY haunts, and if you submit your own pics of your most revered corners of the city you can win a Gucci handbag.

And while you are on the site do not forget to take a peak inside the new 5th Avenue phenomenon with their virtual tour guide. I love the shoe salon, it mimics a fabulous NYC lounge. I wonder, if along with shoes, they will be offering their patrons Mojitos?

And of course it goes without saying, there is a special edition Gucci Loves NY bag made just for this flawlessly engineered marketing ploy. The bag is only available at the 5th Avenue location and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Playground Partners of the Central Park Conservancy.

Oh, and did I mention, it was the Material Girl they choose for the site's mood music...hmm, that brings us back to the big February 8th charity benefit hosted by Gucci and Madonna.

It's All About Orange....

Love DKNY's marketing ploy to pull people to dkny.com. They have errected bright orange bikes all throughout the city emblazoned with dkny.com. This is what they call zero dollar advertisng....brilliant! And once you are on the site, orange is prevalent everywhere, for one their homepage backdrop is bright orange, and every piece of clothing featured on the intro has a touch of orange...this is what they call consistency and thorough deliverance of an advertising message, which in this case is, orange is the color for now! Love the strategy, it is low cost and effective and you cannot get better than that.
