Paris FW: Dior

The Dior show always gives us something to look at and the fall 2007 collection proved that there is a lot to look at - fashion is far from boring. Dior gave us a truly '40s -inspired Old Hollywood collection. It was a full on glam collection incorporating bright punchy colors of fuchsia, peach, lime, and purple. Evening wear was either long and lean or hourglass. There were plenty of cocktail jackets and matching skirt combos and some wonderfully tailored trench coats. One of the finale dresses was a scaled down version of the origami pleated ball gown of his spring couture collection. It was a rather typical Dior collection, one in which we expect nothing less than a memorable show stopping Galliano production.

Paris FW: Chanel

The fall 2007 Chanel collection was very varied, to say the very least. It was a mélange of many things, one being old Chanel mixed with new Chanel mixed with a little street edge and at times, I saw a little rasta chic creeping into some of the looks. There was a definite retro feel to the first three quarters of the show, which then moved into classic evening wear. It was not my favorite collections but I did appreciate the mixing of colors, patterns, fabrics and silhouettes. It was quite inspirational actually and it made a huge statement - layering and the whole mixing and matching look is strong for fall.

Paris Street Style: The Bracelet Sleeves!

I love the whole look. This is such a Miss Stylologist look- skinny pants, belted coat, bracelet sleeves, heels and an over sized bag. I love the shade of blue of her coat (I don't really know what to call it, royal blue, maybe). Blue is such a big color right now, I even think it's overtaking black (well, slowly overtaking it). It is a great foundation color, it is not as serious and stark as black and you can pair almost any color with it.

Paris FW: Yves Saint Laurent

Very unexpected. I was pretty surprised when I clicked to view the fall 2007 YSL collection. It is a very serious, restrained and androgynous collection doused with a strong classic futurism (if that makes any sense). There were many classic silhouettes that had a slight masculinity to them but at the same time a futuristic draw. The YSL show indicated that it is all about the loose, oversized silhouette, whether it be outwear, blazers or trousers, so much so that Pilati himself came out for his show bow in baggy slacks. The color palette was almost non-existent as the YSL successor chose to stay confined to black and grey and all shades in-between. Even with such a solemn collection there were still streaks of YSL signature. My favorites were the dresses, such as the strapless, mille feuille tired, ribbon tied number – a pure YSL statement.

Paris Fashion Week Street Style

Who is the stylish one of them all? During fashion week in Paris the truly, or should I say the haute stylistas come out. You will find them every where you look. You know that fashion week has arrived when every second person, girl or guy, is just so put together you can't help but want to take their picture. Luckily for us we do not have to pull out our lens for we have The Sartorialist to do it for us. Thank you Sart. Thank you.

Here are some of my favorite Paris shots.

So far this is my favorite street look. Minus the gloves and the hat/veil (I think they are a bit much) I love the whole hard rock/soft romantic melange. I would definitely wear this look but I would most likely add a bunch of necklaces (I am a sucker for the necklace layering look).

Check out the heels. Anyone who can pull off an army green parka and glam heels get a triple A+ in my book. I like the just-a-touch of plaid with the grey tunic.
The whole bracelet sleeve look is so big right now...I love the look it creates.
Bracelet sleeves again...I like the lighter color on the bottom darker color on the top styling.

Paris FW: Balenciaga

I do not think I could ever dislike a Balenciaga collection. Season after season, Nicolas Ghesquière always pulls it off. I think it is the show I look most forward to seeing. This season he mixed it up and threw it all together, and, of course, the outcome looked great. It wasn't a signature Ghesquière collection as I was not able to trace many Balenciaga trademarks, rather it was a whole new vision, a whole new look and it worked. I loved the scarves haphazardly thrown about, they added that finishing touch. The mixture of colors, purple with olive and royal blue with khaki was upbeat and fun. The feeling was preppy meets boho meets street with spats of ethnic flavoring thrown in to rev it up. And if I keep going over the line, I find a masculine touch blending classy and sporty . I guess Mr. Ghesquière put it best, "It’s a big mix—a street mix, with symbols and colors that are very multicultural.” I loved it.

Paris FW: Viktor & Rolf

Controversial? Yes. Daring? Yes. Correct? Indeterminable. Safe? Indeterminable. The fall 2007 Viktor & Rolf show took creativity to a whole new level. They sent their models down the runway with, according to style.com, "...heavy steel rigs, further weighed down with tungsten lights and speakers, some of them built up high above their heads," and went on to say, "Then, unable to bend or use their arms to balance, they were asked to walk the runway wearing giant, clunky high-heeled Dutch wooden clogs." Are we talking about a fashion show here?

It is hard to really see the full effect from just the images but the audience was, apparently, completely shaken up for they feared tumbling bodies and broken bones. Will V&R be the talk of the week? Of course they will but it seems no one is really talking about the clothes. I guess any chatter is good chatter but I would like to take a moment to chat about the clothes.

The clothes apart from the apparatuses were phenomenal in a true V&R way. Tailored, fitted, conservative and edgy. I love the belted trench. They always do great trenches (should have snapped up that H&M one while I had the chance). It was a very serious collection full of mix-and-match patterns, cropped pants, skirts and dresses. The Dutch folk influence definitely was apparent.

I wonder if this show is going to stir any new policies and procedures in terms of models and their limitations. I am assuming the focus of the fashion councils will not be so much about their weight but instead their safety on the job.

The Academy Awards Style Re-Cap

Trends, at this year's Academy Awards, were non-existent. Sure their may have been some similarities if you really dug - strapless, mint green, straight silhouette - but none were strong enough or repetitive enough to be considered a true trend.

I feel like this year the girls chose their dresses based purely on their individuality and personality rather than any trend or style. The dresses were all very individual, and I found that most of them really suited the personalities that carried them so gracefully down that infamous red carpet.

Nicole Kidman - the statue herself.
Jennifer Hudson - the show stopper& scene stealer.
Cate Blanchett - cold, yet glamorous with an untouchable air.
Cameron Diaz - complex, unforgettable, pure and simple.
Jennifer Lopez - secretly still love my bling.
Penelope Cruz - glam for the graceful Spanish swan.
Jada Pinkett Smith - smart and sassy.

Kristin Dunst - soft, sweet innocent.
Gwenyth Paltrow - proper.
Kate Winslet - comfortable and put together.
